I remember and think back about places, things, and how good things went. A LOT!
There was only recently a show on some science tv station (not very recent cuz well, we DON"T have tv...cable tv...since The Move). But the show said sometimes when people have *memory problems* it is that they remember TOO much... One lady COULD NOT FORGET certain things, like exact change, times, things on a counter....sort of that OCD thing to the maxx.
I am just saying, i am not complaining or saying i am "that bad"...but that remembering is good, and sometimes odd.
What bopped into my head Saturday while we were at Michaels', a craft store, is how COOL my mom was. And my uncle. A wee ankle biter i know was raving about WOOD! She loves LOVES loves wood. And by that i think she means...pieces. Either balsam or hard wood. Pieces. And it hit me. At about this age, my mom did buy me that BIG pack of balsam wood! I had it for about 9 years afterwards! I crafted a boat, cuz i was into Revell model building, boats only. And i carved...what kind of knife?? Yes yes. at the store i SAW the set of 5 carvie pieces i also had once OWNED!?! Knives. Yeah. I kept them and used them, in a small box coated with a fake piece of wood...contact paper! I crafted pretty good boat. And put a mast and stuff. And kept it for more years. And she bought me a ....wood burning kit!!! Now she sat with me at first but within time, i remember using it on my own...burning the wood, burning leather. Not really DOING anything sale-worthy or ...'good'....but...knowing how to use it and knowing to be careful of the hot tip! My mom sponsored creativity. My uncle went with me and bought me this nice white handled pocket knife! (he'd had this massive man's one...!) I painted from tubes of watercolour....onto real watercolour paper.....I later sat for season tickets of the LA Philharmonic orchestra...Zubin MEHTA!? Unbelievable!!
I mean, as a "meema"...an 'ema' or momma now...on some level i could never NEVER imagine myself being BEING as GREAT as my mom was.... sniff.
And so, like the sick bird, we walked BY the bag of balsam wood....and did not buy it. My beloved better half smarter girl said...no. And she definately said NO to the Wood Burning Kit. And NO to the wood carving stuff too!
