smog and walking

It was probably 1970.

I was remembering how they said, "Don't run the water while you are brushing your teeth...it wastes water!" How i thought as a child that when i grew up, that i'd ride a bike not own a car. And here i am...car-less and one who walks, or takes the bus/subway/train. My uncle dear uncle would tease me for the cliche..."walking is good for you...they say". He found little humor in that saying cuz he felt that THEY were congressmen who HAD cars, and were telling US to conserve gas/protect the environment and so forth.

There was a lot of that going on. Probably Earth Day was begun around these days. Yup, 1969/1970. These days of SMOG and pollution and that stuff in the San Gabriel Valley of California that made some days too bad to exercise or even BE outside?! Our greatest worry, from my assigned seat, was Overpopulation of the World! I mean, there was the Cold War, and Rock and Roll, but i was uber-interested in the environment. And 50's music!?

From the fluid transition of going to a Dodger game, (with a friend), to liking attending Bible studies, to saying "well, the YMCA has a 'c' in it...i will volunteer...!", to meeting at least 5 dynamic counselors and directors and leaders who, coincidentally, also were tom-boyish and such. I digress...
